The hospital gown is built for the two hours. This is built for the three days that follow.

It closes all the way round, so the walks to the nursery and the shower are not spent holding something shut behind you. The crossover front opens to feed and closes again before the visitors come in. And it is a soft jersey knit rather than something stiff, so it does not scratch, and it does not twist itself round you every time you shift.

The openings are still all there for the day itself: a column of press-studs down the whole back for the epidural, a front panel that lifts for monitoring and for a c-section check. Plenty of women wear theirs for the birth and save this for afterwards. Both work.

Honestly, will it not just get ruined?
Birth is messy, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Two things. It is a dark, dense jersey, so it does not show what a pale cotton shows, and it washes hot and comes back. And most women who are worried about this wear the hospital gown for the birth itself and put theirs on afterwards, which is when you are in it for three days rather than two hours. That is why the pair is the option most people take.
Can I wear it during labor, including with an epidural?
Yes. The back is a column of press-studs running from the nape down past the waist. You undo as many as you need and no more, and they snap shut again afterwards, so you are not changing gown and nobody has to help you out of anything. Your team decides on the day, and for a c-section they will usually want you in a sterile gown of theirs.
I am having a planned c-section. Does it still work?
The front panel lifts on its own for checks, and the skirt sits loose rather than across the scar. Wait until your team has cleared you to wear your own clothes.
Will I overheat?
It is a light jersey knit. Thin enough to stay cool through the third trimester, dense enough that it is never see-through.
What size do I order?
Go by your pre-pregnancy size. The wrap front and the elastic under the bust give two to three inches of stretch, then ease back down. Between sizes, take the larger one.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold, tumble dry low. It keeps its stretch and does not pill.
